JAKARTA: The police said over the weekend that a pickup truck with a cargo of clothes was looted shortly after it plunged from an elevated toll road on to vacant land near a warehouse complex in Muara Karang, North Jakarta, on Saturday.
“The vehicle landed not far from a densely populated settlement of scavengers. Besides taking the clothes, the looters also took parts from the vehicle, such as the dashboard,” North Jakarta Police’s traffic accident unit chief Adj. Comr. Daud Iskandar told reporters. Many parts of the car that could be easily removed had also been stolen, he added.
Meanwhile, the three men who were traveling in the vehicle at the time of the incident — the driver and two passengers — were taken to the nearby Atmajaya Hospital for treatment for bruising and other injuries.
Daud said that the truck was on its way to the Tanjung Priok Seaport at a top speed of 60 kilometers per hour at the time of the incident.
“The driver was trying to slow the vehicle down, but something went wrong with the brake system and the vehicle crashed through the toll-road barrier and plunged down a height of somewhere between 8 and 10 meters,” he explained.
