Shippers enjoy growth during Ramadhan

ndonesia’s courier service and logistics company PT Tiki Jalur Nugraha Ekakurir (JNE) saw a 90 percent volume increase in package deliveries during the fasting month of Ramadhan this year compared to the same period last year.

JNE managing director Johari Zein said that the increase in delivery was influenced by the flourishing online shopping business, which saw a surge in the month before Idul Fitri. The few weeks before the annual celebration are usually the busiest shopping period for millions of Indonesians, especially in terms of food and fashion goods.

“We’ve delivered some 140 tons of packages [on average] a day this month,” Johari said in a statement to The Jakarta Post. He said the volume during Ramadhan was up 50 percent compared to the previous month. “Delivery services from Jakarta to Bekasi, Bogor, Depok and Tangerang accounted for 60 percent of total deliveries, followed by interprovincial services especially between Java and Sumatra.”

He said increasing demand had occurred in other big cities like Bandung, West Java; Surabaya, East Java; Semarang, Central Java; Denpasar, Bali; Palembang, South Sumatra; and Makassar, South Sulawesi.

JNE also enjoyed 100 percent growth in its motorcycle delivery service during Ramadhan, compared to the same period last year.

“We have started sending motorcycles to hometowns since June, with 60 percent demand growth every month,” he said.

The holding company, JNE, would establish a logistics company called JNE Logistics some time this year and would later establish JNE Express, which would focus on the courier service business.

State postal service PT Pos Indonesia also enjoyed a significant increase in deliveries of both mail and packages ahead of Idul Fitri, Pos Indonesia president director I Ketut Mardjana said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Ketut said compared to regular months, mail deliveries were up by 15 percent while packages were up by 70 percent during Ramadhan.

“Package deliveries even rose by 30 to 40 percent compared to Ramadhan last year,” he said.

The growth of package deliveries, he said, was due to the booming of the online shopping business.
