AMBI: The Sarolangun Environment Agency (BLHD) is carrying out an environmental management evaluation, locally known as a proper, to evaluate the practices of 25 mining and plantation companies in the regency.
The results of the evaluation will be published by the end of 2012.
BLHD Sarolangun director HA Haris said that he had formed teams to monitor the companies’ activities. Once every three months, the teams visited the companies to take a closer look at their activities.
Haris said that the program was part of an effort to prevent pollution and environmental damage. The inspections consider aspects including environment-management systems, waste and conservation management practices, corporate social responsibility programs and Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal).
“This is the first time we have conducted a proper evaluation following the growth of industry in Sarolangun,” Haris explained.
“During the evaluation period, we will issue warnings to companies that are proven to have caused pollution or posed danger to the surrounding environment,” he said.
