EKANBARU: Two Riau councilors, M Dunir and M Faisal Aswan, stood trial on Wednesday at the Pekanbaru Corruption Court where prosecutors indicted the two lawmakers for bribery.
Dunir and Faisal are among 10 suspects allegedly involved in a graft case centering on the construction of sporting venues for the upcoming National Games (PON), scheduled to be held in September.
“The defendants violated Articles 11 and 12 of the 1999 Corruption Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison,” said prosecutor Riyono.
Faisal was caught red-handed by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) at his home in May when he received bribes worth Rp 900 million (US$94,500) for the revision of Bylaw No. 6/2012 on the National Games budget. The bribe was handed over by Eka Darma Putra, an official with Riau’s Youth and Sports Agency.
KPK arrested Dunir and other lawmakers later the same day for their involvement in the case.
“Faisal admitted that he was only told to get the money, which would be handed to Dunir. It turned out that the money was the tips for the lawmakers for revising Bylaw No. 6/2010,” Riyono said.
The trial, presided over by Judge Krosbin Lumban Gaol, was adjourned until after the Idul Fitri holidays.
