fter almost 10 years of deliberations, the House of Representatives has endorsed the Yogyakarta’s Special Status Bill, confirming Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and Sri Paku Alam IX as the province’s governor and deputy governor.
With the bill’s passage, Hamengkubuwono, 66, and Paku Alam, 74, will be reappointed as the province’s chief executives until 2016.
Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi told reporters that the government would ask President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to quickly enact the bill into law.
“Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsudin and I will propose that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono sign the newly approved bill by Monday so it will soon go into effect, because we only have 39 days before the end of the terms of the governor and deputy governor in early October,” Gamawan said on the sidelines of a House plenary meeting on Thursday to approve the bill.
Gamawan added that the government and lawmakers from House Commission II overseeing domestic government were scheduled to depart for Yogyakarta on Tuesday to officially advise the Sultan of the bill’s passage.
