Soccer star Andik goes
stateside

Indonesian under-21 (U-21) soccer team striker Andik Vermansyah is one step closer to a full international debut as he head for a trail at US Major League Soccer club DC United.

Timnas coach Aji Santoso said that Andik would be joining the club’s training for 10 to 14 days.

“Andik will fly to the US on Friday to for train and a trial,” Aji said Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

If the trial goes well, there is every chance that the Washington DC-based coul sign Andik up as an intern or a even as a full-time member of the squad.

Andik’s invitation came about with the help of Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir. Erick is one of is United’s major shareholders.

“I’ve got to grab this golden chance. I am prepared for anything,” Andik said.

Popularly known as “Indonesia's Lionel Messi”, Andik grabbed the attention of the country's soccer fans with his performances for his club Persebaya Surabaya and the Indonesian U-21 team.

Andik, now 20 years old, has received a full scholarship from Dr. Soetomo University in Surabaya to study management in its Faculty of Economics. (swd)
