Part of the canopy at a tennis stadium at PTPN V compound, one of the venues for the National Games (PON), in Pekanbaru, Riau, collapsed and injured two construction workers on Thursday evening.
Witnesses said that the incident occurred at 5 p.m., when heavy rain and high winds struck the city. The canopy fell on two construction workers, one of whom was left unconscious.
Antara news agency reported that the Pekanbaru Police immediately closed the site for an investigation.
“We have yet to determine the cause of the accident,” said Adj. Comr. Arief Fajar from the Pekanbaru Police, adding that the Riau Police would assist in the investigation.
Riau governor H.M. Rusli Zainal dismissed the incident as “a small mishap” caused by nature.
“Only the canopy was damaged, the arena is still in a good condition and ready to be used,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
Riau administration had instructed the stadium’s contractor to fix the problem and officials would also inspect the building’s structure, the governor added.
The stadium is set to stage tennis matches in the national sports tournament, which will run from Wednesday until Sept. 20. (yps/iwa)
