Both gubernatorial tickets were present at the campaign event “Betawi Mau Pilkada Damai” (Betawi want a peaceful election) during Car Free Day at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle on Sunday.
Governor Fauzi “Foke” Bowo came with running mate Nachrowi Ramli, his wife, children and grandchildren. He pledged that no discrimination between races and religions would happen if he were chosen again, adding "choose mustache number1".
Meanwhile out-of-towner Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and running mate Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, chatted about the number of bicycle lanes in the city.
“The number of bicycle lanes here is far from enough,” Jokowi said during the event as quoted by kompas.com.
Participants carried posters calling for peace during the four-day campaign period that ends on Monday, while some Ondel-ondel (Betawi effigies) brightened up the rally.
“A chaotic Jakarta election, what would the world say?” one of the posters reads.
Some disabled people also participated, calling for the elected governor to pay attention to their interests.
Foke and Jokowi will compete in the runoff on Sept. 20, in which around 7 million people are expected to vote. (fzm/iwa)
