Jakarta Public Works Agency’s technical service unit cleaned up the East Flood Canal on Wednesday in order to ease water flow along the river.

The unit’s coordinator Sarman Marpaung said that the team had removed garbage and rooted out water hyacinth that clogged several spots along the canal. “We deployed 100 officers and six trucks for today’s clean-up,” he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

He said that the spots where garbage and water hyacinth were often found were under Cakung elevated toll road, under the bridge of Cakung train station, under the Robusta bridge and around Rawabebek.

Sarman said that in keeping the 23-kilometer long canal clean, they regularly deployed a total of 100 officers in several locations.

“We hope regular cleaning of the canal can help solve flooding problems.”
