The Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS), one of Asia-Pacific's biggest automotive exhibitions, kicked off in Jakarta on Thursday. The 10-day event showcases 35 automotive companies and is expected to attract 350,000 visitors.
The event was initiated by the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association (Gaikindo) and was organized under Dyandra Promosindo at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) arena in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
Vice President Boediono was scheduled to open the event, but later said that he would visit the exhibition on Friday.
According to Johnny Darmawan, the head of IIMS 2012 organizing committee, 25 participants of the event are private vehicle brands while 10 of them are commercial vehicle brands. Johnny said that the number of participants had increased from last year’s 32 brands.
Included in the participants are Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daihatsu, Dodge, Ford, Geely, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jeep, KIA, Mazda and Mercedes-Benz.
Johnny said that most of the brands had tried to display smart cars, which are not heavily dependent on fossil fuel. The brands are promoting the use of efficient fuels and an ecologically friendly lifestyle and spirit.
During the 10-day show, the organizers will provide free shuttle buses connecting the venue with various spots in the city, including Pondok Indah Mall 2, Plaza Senayan, Margo City, Tamini Square and Central Park Mall. The shuttles will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (fzm)
