The Makassar Police on Thursday released pictures of two men who allegedly blew up a Bank Mandiri automatic teller machine (ATM) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Thursday.
Makassar Police chief detective Sr. Adj. Comr. Himawan Sugeha said the digitally produced sketches were based on witness testimony and a video footage from the ATM’s CCTV camera.
“We have identified the two. They reside not far from the ATM booth and work near the Makassar Port,” said Himawan, adding that both men were less than 30 years old.
The police assumed that they were amateurs given that they had no criminal records and did not cover their faces during the crime.
The perpetrators intended to steal cash from the ATM, Himawan said.
“We consider the blast as a violent robbery.”
Based on forensics tests, the homemade, small-explosive was made from a plastic bottle, ammonium nitrate, gasoline and gels.
On early Thursday, police tried to capture the men by raiding a house on Jl Rajawali in Makassar, but to no avail. (yps/swd)
