A student, identified as Ibrahim, died as a result of a fight between students that took place in front of the Indonesia Muslim University campus in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Thursday afternoon.
Ibrahim, an electrical engineering student at the university, was stabbed in the abdomen and later died from his injuries at the Ibnu Sina hospital. Another student identified as Idris suffered stab wounds to the head.
Reports said that the brawl was triggered by a misunderstanding between senior and junior students, after the juniors were reprimanded by the seniors for wearing the seniors’ uniforms. Dozens of students were involved in the brawl.
University deputy rector Achmad Gani said that the brawl was over very quickly. “After the victim was stabbed, the fighting suddenly stopped,” he said. The case is currently under investigation by the university and the Makassar Police. The police seized arrows, badik (traditional knife) and machetes from the scene as evidence.
“As soon as we identify the attacker, we will turn him over to police,” he cited, adding that all students involved in the brawl would be sanctioned.
A number of police personnel were deployed to guard the university. The situation on the campus has since returned to normal. (swd)
