Head of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center Surono said on Friday that Mt. Lokon in North Sulawesi had erupted and spewed volcanic materials up to a height of 2.5 kilometers (km).

The eruption took place at 10:18 a.m. local time, but Surono said that evacuations were not yet necessary. The mountain, with a height of 1,579 above sea level, also erupted on Wednesday at 11:01 p.m.

“The ejection of volcanic materials from the mountain is only within a 1-2 two kilometer radius, so the residents do not have to evacuate yet,” he said. (iwa)
