Although she is the daughter of traditional cosmetics tycoon Martha Tilaar, Wulan Tilaar says she took the hard road to reach the executive position she holds today.

During school holidays, little Wulan gave out flyers at the Jakarta Fairgrounds. She also learned massage techniques and how to give facials to better understand the spa business.

“Unlike what most people think, I don’t go to salon and spa every day because I don’t have the time,” said the director of Martha Tilaar Group, laughing.

Here she reveals her formula for relaxing during her free time away from the office, and the development of the beauty industry in Indonesia.

Holiday rituals…

I go out with my children. We have spent half the year visiting museums in Jakarta. I think it’s a good alternative for a weekend than going to the mall. Museums can give inspiration and we can learn a lot about history and culture.

Daily beauty regimen …

It depends on how much time I have. If I only have five minutes or I’m in a rush, usually I only clean my face with facial foam or with cleansing milk and toner. If I have more time, I apply a face cream such as Biokos, or a moisturizer with sunblock.

I prefer BB cream to foundation because it can cover skin blemishes quickly. Then I apply mascara, eyeliner and lipstick. Something that we should remember to apply is eye cream and neck cream.

And treatment …

I have limited time because I have small children, so I don’t do beauty treatments too frequently. I have a facial once a month. If I have acne – and yes I still have acne sometimes – I up the frequency to once every two weeks. I do a hair spa once every two weeks and a manicure-pedicure once a month.

Definition of beauty today…

Each person has his/her own definition of beauty. One thing is for sure, people nowadays want quick results.

For us, the ultimate beauty concept is Rupasampat wahyabiantara, which is depicted by Dewi Saraswati, the goddess of womanly perfection. Just like Dewi Saraswati, a woman should be able to look good, have strong faith, be eloquent and well educated.

Beauty industry today …

Indonesia is witnessing the blooming of its beauty industry, with players both local and international. We see products from Europe and the US, and now we can also find products from regional brands from China and South Korea. Indonesian brands should be able to compete with them. + Tifa Asrianti
