State power company PT PLN’s office in Jambi says it will start cutting power to customers who have not paid their bills in three months.

Office spokesman H. Tambunan said that the action was warranted by the late- and non-paying customers who have racked up more than Rp 15 billion (US$1.56 million)in unpaid charges in the last quarter alone.

“We will take serious action by immediately cutting power for those more than three months in arrears,” Tambunan said.

Customers who repay their bills after their power is cut will have to fill out paperwork at the nearest PLN office before their service is restored.

The office will deploy 10 to 20 technicians to individual district in Jambi to manually shut down power.

The areas with the greatest number of customers in arrears are Telanai Pura, Kotabaru, Sebrang Kota Jambi, Muara Bulian, Tungkal, Muara Sabak.

The Rp 15.57 billion owed by customers in those districts was the highest recorded to date in 2012, Tambunan said. (fzm/swd)
