Batik Day observed with exhibition

OGYAKARTA: The Saudagaran Yogyakarta batik exhibition is being held at the Koesnadi Hardjasoemantri Cultural Center in Yogyakarta for a week to commemorate the third National Batik Day.

Organizer Wisnuwati said batik fabrics from the Saudagar (merchant) collection, including pieces from as early as the 1800s to the 1970s, would be on display.

“We will exhibit 43 pieces of batik fabric from the collection of 20 merchants,” said Wisnuwati, who also serves as the Sekar Jagat Indonesian Batik Lovers Association’s research division coordinator, on Tuesday.

She added that batik, as part of a developing culture, reflected a variety of cultural developments. “The Gagrak Mataram Yogyakarta batik [known as Yogyakarta batik] has been produced since the Giyanti Agreement and has developed in line with cultural changes,” she added.

Through the exhibition, Wisnuwati hoped that batik would further be appreciated by the community, especially batik tulis, or hand-drawn batik.

Besides the exhibition, a bazaar and workshop on batik will also be held on Oct. 4 at the same place.
