It was a moment of reconciliation for outgoing Governor Fauzi Bowo when on his last day working at City Hall, the governor, accompanied by his deputy Prijanto, gave his successor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo a tour of his new office.

“As you can see here, these are pictures of Jakarta’s former chiefs. On that wall are the former governors and on this one are former mayors, back when the capital was led by a mayor,” the governor explained a section of City Hall during the tour on Friday.

Jokowi and deputy governor-elect Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama visited City Hall upon being invited by Fauzi. Fauzi has conceded his defeat to Jokowi in the tight election that was marred by negative campaigns by both camps, even though election observers and pundits perceived the entire election process to be relatively fair and democratic.

The meeting with Jokowi also marked the first time Fauzi and Prijanto shared center stage following the latter’s denied resignation after years of rumored friction.

Wearing their finest batik, the four of them scaled the building room by room, including Fauzi’s office on the second floor. Fauzi later took Jokowi and Ahok into a main meeting hall where almost all governor assistants, administration bureau chiefs, agency chiefs, mayors and district chiefs have waited.

“This is a historical moment. Pak Prijanto and I had the opportunity to guide the governor-elect and deputy governor-elect in a tour at our City Hall,” Fauzi said.

Fauzi later introduced Jokowi, who had recently resigned from his post as mayor of Surakarta to his subordinates.

“I hoped this meeting would be an effective bridge. I have requested all my friends here to give full support to the governor-elect and deputy governor-elect. We all want the same thing for Jakarta; for the city to prosper and improve,” Fauzi said.

The incumbent later gave Jokowi a book on Bylaw No. 10/2008 on Administrative Organization, Administration Secretary Duties, District, Subdistrict and the Public Order Office. “I believe this book will be a good read for the new chiefs in beginning their term in Jakarta,” Fauzi said.

Jokowi made use the event to debunk a rumor saying he would do a major reorganization immediately after being inducted to office. “I urge you not to take the rumor seriously. I assure you there will be no reorganization. If it’s a good organization, it won’t need to be torn down,” Jokowi told the high officials.

“We cannot let the issue disturb public service,” he said.

Jokowi surpassed Fauzi in the Sept. 20 runoff election, winning 53.82 percent of the vote, compared to 46.18 percent gained by his opponent.

The new governor was supposed to be sworn in into office on Sunday, which is the last day of Fauzi’s term.

The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) had said that administrative paperwork would delay the induction ceremony.

Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi said Thursday that he would appoint Jakarta administration secretary Fadjar Panjaitan as a temporary administration chief during the transition.

Contacted separately, Fadjar said he had yet to receive the letter from the Home Minister.

On Friday afternoon, Fauzi’s family members came to City Hall to pick him up from his last day of office in a surprise event that featured a dance and poetry reading, and also bouquets of flowers from his wife Sri Hartati Humardhani, children and grandchildren.

Guests were offered light meals including kerak telor (a traditional native Jakarta snack) and selat Solo (a favorite beef dish from Surakarta, which is also known as Solo)

The event was attended by hundreds of City Hall employees and high officials, who could not hold back tears as they witnessed the governor say goodbye.
