Former governor Wiyogo Atmodarminto dies at 85
Former Jakarta governor Wiyogo Atmodarminto died on Friday night at MMC Hospital, South Jakarta. He was 85.
He was buried at Kalibata Heroes cemetery on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Wiyogo led Jakarta from 1987 to 1992. He was known for his concept of Jakarta BMW; bersih, manusiawi dan berwibawa (clean, humane and influential).
Born in Yogyakarta on Nov. 22, he was commander of the Army Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) from 1978-1980.
He was later appointed as provincial army commander (Kowilhan) in 1981-1993. His highest military rank was Let. Gen. before retiring from the military.
After leaving the Army he was Indonesian ambassador to Japan before becoming the Jakarta governor, Antara news wire reports.(iwa)
