Yogyakarta will have a museum of mountain cultures next year.
Education and Culture Deputy Minister Wiendu Nuryandti said over the weekend that the ministry, in cooperation with Yogyakarta administration and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) would build the museum next to the Merapi Vulcanology Museum in Hargobinangun village in Sleman, Yogyakarta.
Windu said while the vulcanology museum focused on science, the culture museum would display focus on how people adapted to life on volcanic mountains.
“The museum will display traditions such as Mount Merapi gatekeeper- the legendary Mbah Marijan- and ceremonies held by villagers,” she said.
A team member of the museum development project from UGM, Ika Saputra, said the team was working on the project and would start to build the museum in 2013 with the funds from the ministry. (cor/iwa)
