Heavy rain on late Sunday in the Soreang district of Bandung, West Java, caused a landslide which cut access from Bandung to Ciwidey, a tourism spot about 35 kilometers from downtown Bandung.
West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Sigit Udjwalaprana said Monday that his agency believed at least two people were killed in the incident.
“We have been informed that the landslide buried two people on Sunday night. Considering the timing, they’re probably dead by now,” Sigit said. The two victims were identified as Rostini, 30, and her daughter, Siti, 9.
As of 11.30 a.m. on Monday, the main road connecting Bandung and Ciwidey was still blocked, forcing vehicles from Bandung detour via Soreang – Panyirapan – Cimonje before reaching Ciwidey. Normally, it is a two-hour trip by car from Bandung to Ciwidey.
Ciwidey home to tea plantations, Kawah Putih (White Crater), Cimanggu and Rancaupas camping sites.
The BPBD will continue the search for victims and normalize the main road on Monday.(han)
