A male leopard died soon after being captured by villagers and Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) officers in Mandau district, Bengkalis, Riau, on Friday.

BKSDA officer Muhammad Nanang said he and other officers went to East Duri village after residents reported that they had detected the presence of a leopard in the village over the past few days.

Assisted by BKSDA officers, the villagers trapped the leopard after they found him eating a cat behind a house, Nanang said.

“Apparently, the leopard was stressed because a mob surrounded it,” he said. “We should have calmed him down by pouring cold water onto his body before taking him into a car.”

Nanang said the BKSD had not decided whether to bury the leopard or bring it to Pekanbaru for further examination. “We are still waiting for instructions,” he said. (cor)
