tudents in Pekanbaru, Riau Islands, eagerly welcomed the Youth Speak Fun Day (YSFD) English-based games and competition event held at the Tanjak Laksamana Chevron Center involving around 2,200 students from 39 senior high, vocational and Islamic senior high schools in Pekanbaru, Bangkinang, Minas, Duri and Dumai.
The students are taking part in the English debate, spelling bee, reading, photography and writing competitions, while the games category include Scrabble, a poster competition, text for textiles and cupid pen.
The preliminary round was held for two days on Nov. 22 and 23 at SMA 8 senior high school. Participants who qualified in the preliminary round will compete in the final round that will be held at the peak of the event on Saturday.
“The competition between students will boost their spirit to further enjoy learning English,” SMA 4 Pekanbaru English teacher Herna told The Jakarta Post.
“The most important thing is how to make the students have fun speaking English. A competition like this is one of the ways. If they have progressed, they would know the benefits,” said Herna.
A news-reading competition jury member, Hermina Silvi Sukinto, said the current competition was fantastic because every school registered many participants. “Not only students who have skills, but those who have barely enough skill are also included,” said Hermina.
The Jakarta Post (TJP) Foundation Executive Director Yulia Herawati said the main goal of the YSFD was not seeking a champion, but the main aim was cooperation with the Education Ministry.
“The competitions and games are expected to unite thousands of students, despite being conducted in a strict manner,” said Yulia.
PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI) and TJP Foundation have provided a means of social education among students from various schools.
TJP Foundation and CPI are also working together with Bank Mandiri to organize the Young Entrepreneurship Program at Hotel Pangeran, which will be attended by 100 students. The peak of the YSFD event is expected to be attended by 5,000 students.
