Agung Laksono appointed as acting Sports Minister
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has assigned Coordinating People’s Welfare Minister Agung Laksono as acting Youth and Sports Minister. He replaces outgoing Andi Mallarangeng who resigned on Friday.
“I met him [Andi] at 8 a.m. today and he officially resigned as of today [Friday, Dec. 7, 2012],” Yudhoyono told a press conference on Friday.
Agung has temporarily replaced Andi until Yudhoyono officially appoints a new minister.
Yudhoyono added that Andi reasoned that his travel ban would mean he would be unable to do his job efficiently and he was afraid he would disturb the work of other cabinet members. Andi also said that he would concentrate on the legal proceedings.
“Therefore I approved his resignation,” Yudhoyono said, adding that he appreciated Andi’s decision amid the legal case that he was implicated in.
“He’s a good example,” Yudhoyono said.
He also said that during his term Andi had done his job well and pointed to Indonesia’s achievement as overall champion in the 26th SEA Games as one of his term’s highlights.
“Speaking in my capacity as the Democratic Party’s chief patron, Andi has also resigned from his position [as secretary of Democratic Party’s board of patrons] in the party but he is still a member of Democratic Party,” Yudhoyono said.(han/iwa)
