Former sports minister
questioned in Hambalang
graft scandal

The Corruption Eradication Commission summoned former Youth and Sports Minister Adhyaksa Dault as a witness for Andi Mallarangeng, the newly resigned minister who is a suspect in the graft-ridden sports center project in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java.

“I am being summoned to provide information on the Hambalang graft scandal with Andi Mallarangeng as its main suspect,” Adhyaksa told reporters as he arrived at KPK’s headquarters on Tuesday.

He reiterated that during his tenure as minister, the Hambalang sports complex plan was a modestly budgeted project valued at around Rp 125 billion (US$12,97 million), but when Andi took over the position, the budget swelled significantly to Rp 1.17 trillion.

During his tenure, Adhyaksa added that he halted the construction of the project because the ministry had not secured the land-use certificate (HGU) for 32 hectares of land designated for the project.

At that time, the HGU was still owned by Probosutejo, the half-brother of late president Soeharto.

The KPK has named two suspects in the case, Andi and Deddy Kusdinar, a senior official at the ministry.

The case first came to light after former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin threw allegations that Andi as well as the party’s chairman Anas Urbaningrum, masterminded the graft scheme.(iwa)
