PT Isuzu Astra Motor Indonesia says it will focus on the public transportation market across the nation next year.

The shift in focus followed declining sales to mining and plantation firms, Isuzu’s biggest clients for commercial vehicles such as trucks and minibuses, Daisuke Yamada, Isuzu Astra Motor Indonesia’s general manager of sales in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, said.

Prospects were better in the public transportation market, Yamada said. “It is not only in big cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, but also in Balikpapan, Samarinda and other cities in East Kalimantan and other islands outside Java, we have found potential in public transportation.”

However, Yamada said that Isuzu would not abandon its existing clients as it eyed expanding into new markets.

Puti Annisa Moeloek, Isuzu’s advertising and promotion supervisor, said that the mining and plantation industries would pick up in two years, according to the firm’s assessment of the market.
