Hatta’s son ‘physically, mentally unable’ to face questioning

T

he suspect in a deadly car accident on Jan. 1, M. Rasyid Amrullah, is not ready to leave hospital to face police questioning, say medics.

Rasyid, 22, the youngest son of Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa, was hospitalized for shock and a stomach complaint at the VVIP unit of Pertamina Hospital, South Jakarta, after the accident that claimed two lives and injured another three.

Abdul Harris, a member of Rasyid’s medical team at the hospital, said that Rasyid was still feeling nauseous, vomiting and suffering from headaches.

“We have no intention of interfering in the legal process, but Rasyid’s physical and mental condition is not yet stable. Therefore, he would not be able to fully follow the legal process,” Abdul said as quoted by Kompas.com. “If his condition improves in the next few days, we will hand him over to the police.”

Abdul said the hospital had prepared Rasyid’s latest medical records to be given to the police.

Rasyid’s father, Hatta, said he hoped his son would recover soon to face legal proceedings as a law-abiding citizen.

“When he is declared ready, I’m the one who will take him to the Jakarta Police headquarters,” Hatta said in a press conference at the hospital.

On Tuesday morning at 5:45 a.m., Rasyid was driving his BMW X5 at 120 kilometers per hour when he rear-ended a Daihatsu Luxio on the Jagorawi toll road.

Two passengers in the Luxio, 57-year-old Harun and 14-month-old M. Raihan, died in the accident. Three others, including Raihan’s parents suffered minor injuries.

The police said that Rasyid was drowsy after staying up all night to celebrate the New Year in Kemang, South Jakarta, with his girlfriend, Prilia Kinanti, 22. He was on his way home to Fatmawati from Prilia’s house in Tebet, both in South Jakarta, when the accident occurred.

The police have named Rasyid a suspect and said that he could face five years in prison if found guilty of causing death by reckless driving.

Police watchdog Indonesia Police Watch had demanded the police issue a travel ban for Rasyid over concerns that he would fly back to London to finish his studies. (nad)
