he Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTNS) has closed the 3,676-meter Mount Semeru in Lumajang regency to climbers and tourists due to bad weather.
TNBTNS head Nova Elina said here on Tuesday that the ban would be effective until the rainy season ended in March.
“Based on the experience of climbers who have recently ascended Mt. Semeru and on the evaluation of field officers that the rainy season will reach its peak in the next three months, we have decided to temporarily prohibit tourists and climbers from ascending the peak,” she said.
The mountain was typically covered in thick clouds while paths to the peak were prone to landslides during the rainy season, Nova added.
The closure is the second since October, when a university student was lost on the mountain. Officials reopened the peak on Dec. 24, allowing hundreds of locals and tourists to ascend it to celebrate New Year’s, before closing it for the remainder of rainy season.
