AKARTA: A teenage boxer died from a cerebral hemorrhage after he lost a flyweight bout, fight organizers say.
Tubagus Setia Sakti, 17, died on Sunday, one day after he was taken to Indonesian Christian University (UKI) Hospital in Cawang, East Jakarta, tempo.co reported on Sunday.
The boy passed out and suffered seizures after he lost in a technical knockout in Round 8 against Ical Tobiada in the “Ring Tinju TVRI” national flyweight championship bout.
“He [Tubagus] died of a brain hemorrhage at 1:30 p.m.,” Lojor, the security coordinator for the championship, said.
Misyanto, Tubagus’ coach, said that the boy had been in good shape when he entered the ring, blaming the referee for not stopping the match after Tubagus raised his hand to concede.
Tubagus, from South Lampung, had been boxing for a year with a record of 7-0-0, including 2 TKOs.
The boy’s father, Iwan Falas, arrived at the hospital at about 1 p.m. and later said that he was proud that his son died in the ring.
“We are from poor family. I encouraged him to take up boxing to keep him away from becoming a criminal. I thank God that my son did not die in a mob hit for stealing,” he said.
