Issue of the day: Rape joke judge left out in the cold

In what could be seen as a triumph of the online movement against misogyny, the House of Representatives on Wednesday left out rape joke judge Muhammad Daming Sanusi from the list of eight candidates who had passed the fit-and-proper-test for Supreme Court justice positions.

Members of the House Commission III overseeing law and human rights apparently bowed to public pressure by giving a “no” vote to Daming in the selection process.

The House commission, denied that it had caved in to public pressure.

“No one voted for him not because of public pressure but simply because he didn’t have the quality to become a Supreme Court justice,” chairman of House Commission III I Gede Pasek Suardika told reporters.

Your comments:

I think it shows that, in a certain way, democracy is not going so bad in Indonesia because, if it wasn’t the case, Daming wouldn’t have been dismissed.

Then again, I’m from Canada and I don’t know a lot about Indonesian politics.Despite that, I’m happy to see that justice has been done.

It’s important to fight for the respect of women and this is the first step on the right path.

You cannot make a joke about rape because rape is horrible.

Let’s just think about India. It’s important to act, to change the mentality of some men and save the rights of women!

The dismissal of this guy is a step in the right direction, but a lot still needs to be done.

I think this judge pretends he doesn’t understand the meaning of rape. If both parties enjoy the intercourse, it means making love not rape.

What an idiot! This comment should have been kept between him and his close friends or colleagues.

Didn’t he consider that, he is a public figure and may be a role model for some people?

If leaders behave like this, no wonder they don’t regard corruption, collusion and nepotism as taboo.

I salute the House’s Commission III lawmakers for their decision. Despite not mentioning the rape joke as the reason, the decision was in accordance with public opinion. Daming was not an appropriate
candidate.
