ndonesian chess players Susanto Megaranto and Medina Warda Aulia had to settle with third place in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, at the recent Asian Zone 3.3 Chess Championship in Tagaytay, Philippines.
Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam won the men’s competition by scoring 7.5 points, followed by Wesley So of Philippines with 7 points.
Both secured their tickets for the World Chess Championship in Tromso, Norway, in August. On the other hand, Susanto, who collected 6 points, failed to emulate his previous successful performance.
The women’s prizes also belonged to Vietnam with Nguyen Thi Thanh An managing to amass 6.5 points. Home player Bernadette Galas took second place. Medina equaled her collection of 6 points, but the 15-year-old Indonesian was beaten on tie-break calculations.
Medina was just half a point shy of the minimum score that would have given her a women’s grandmaster norm, according to team manager Kristianus Liem on Tuesday.
