Banjarmasin to introduce
Sunday floating market

Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan is to become home to a new floating market on the Martapura River around Jalan Piere Tendean this Sunday.

Head of the Banjarmasin Tourism and Culture Office Norhasan said on Monday that the new market had attracted traders from two traditional floating markets – Kuin market on the Barito River and Lok Baitan in Banjar Regency.

Traders will sell their goods from their jukung boats. Each will receive an incentive of Rp 50,000 to enliven the new market, Norhasan said.

“It will be just once a week, on Sundays. The main objective is to attract as many visitors as possible and increase commercial activity at the site of the market,” Norhasan said as quoted Antara News Agency

The new market will not threaten the old, traditional ones, but is expected to become a new tourist attraction

“We want to revive and promote the new floating market because two old ones have become less attractive and may soon be gone,” Norhasan added. (nfk)
