he Deli Serdang Police on Friday detained 15 illegal immigrants from Myanmar as they were traveling on the Trans-Sumatra Highway to Medan, North Sumatra.
Deli Serdang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Erwin Syahputra Manik said the immigrants had just arrived in Indonesia at Gombus, Batu Bara regency, at around 3 a.m. on Friday.
“They departed from Malaysia on Wednesday morning by boat,” he said.
Erwin added the immigrants rented the boat for RM400 (US$129). As they arrived in waters off Gombus, said Erwin, they were picked up by a minivan driver and headed for Medan. However, as the minivan traveled along the Trans-Sumatra Highway in Deli Serdang regency, patrol officers stopped and searched the minivan.
“During the inspection, all of the immigrants failed to show their passports and visas, so the officers arrested them and brought them to Deli Serdang Police headquarters,” he said.
