The National Awakening Party said that it could back the candidacy of self-styled “king of dangdut” Rhoma Irama for the 2014 presidential election. PKB chairman Muhaimin Iskandar said with Rhoma’s electability rating steadily improving, it could be possible that he would be picked as a presidential candidate.
“He comes in fourth position and this is very surprising and also very heartening,” Muhaimin said as quoted by Antara news wire.
The latest poll results from Jakarta-based pollster, the United Data Center (PDB), recorded Rhoma in fourth place after Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the Greater Indonesian Movement (Gerindra) Party patron Lt. Gen. (ret) Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Muhaimin voiced certainty that Rhoma would stand a chance of success in the poll. “Popularity-wise, he is number one, no doubt about it,” Muhaimin said.
