ustoms and excise officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have foiled two attempts to smuggle a total of 664 grams of crystal methamphetamine into the country in separate packages.

Airport customs office chief Okto Irianto said on Tuesday that intelligence officers found a suspicious package on Feb. 1 in a warehouse. The package, which was sent from Shivajinagar, India, was declared to contain a Germkill Kit water purifier.

“Officers found 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 675 million (US$69,984) inside three water purifier tubes,” he said.

He said the package was to be delivered to an address in Kebagusan subdistrict, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. An Indonesian woman and a Nigerian, identified as DW and SJE, respectively, were arrested accordingly, the customs officer said.

On Feb. 3, officers found another suspicious package sent from Lagos, Nigeria, at the same warehouse. The package, which was declared to contain lamp holders, instead contained 164 grams of the same substance worth Rp 221 million.

The package was addressed to an Indonesian man identified as ST in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara. Officers arrested Indonesians MF and ST as a result and named them suspects.

Airport police drug detective chief Comr. Alamsyah said actually a total of four men and four women were arrested in relation to the two attempts, while the drug dealer was still at large.

Customs offices have foiled nine drug smuggling attempts since January and seized a total of 8,384 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 2,200 catamine pills worth Rp 14.3 billion in total.
