nnisa Azwar, 20, who died after bringing herself to jump from a moving public minivan, did so because she thought the driver was going to kidnap her, police say.
“Our preliminary inquiry concludes so. But we are still developing the case to find more evidence and information on the case,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters on Tuesday.
The driver, who has been named a suspect for negligence leading to the death of an individual and for traffic violations, is facing more than six years behind bars.
Rikwanto said the driver admitted to choosing a different route because it was raining heavily and traffic was congested.
“The Jakarta Transportation Agency acknowledges that public minivans sometimes take shortcuts to avoid traffic jams,” he said.
Jakarta Transportation Council chairman Azas Tigor Nainggolan criticized the authorities for being unable to properly control public transportation, which he said resulted in perpetual crimes.
“They beef up security only after an incident occurs. That’s not sustainable,” he said.
