staffer with the population and civil registration unit in Grogol, West Jakarta, told the police on Friday that the office had issued birth certificates as requested by the suspect in a baby trafficking case.
The civil servant said that the suspect, identified by the initials LD, gave him “thank-you money” for each document issued.
“They received hundreds of thousands rupiah after getting one document done,” city police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto was quoted by kompas.com.
The civil servant, identified as J, was questioned on Friday as a witness in the relation to the case of a syndicate that sold babies, with birth certificates and passports, for their buyers.
The network sold babies in Jakarta and abroad, including Singapore. Police said about 200 babies had been sold since around 1992.
Rikwanto said that another three staffers with the population office in Central Jakarta had been summoned as witnesses in the case.
