Australian dies in Balikpapan
off road adventure

An adventure trail in Hutan Raya Bukit Soeharto Park, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan proved to be the scene of a death over the weekend.

Thirty five-year-old Australian, Headley Michael Adrian, died during his participation in an off road adventure in the park.

Found to have been exhausted in the Semoi forest area of Penajam Paser Utara regency early on Saturday, the man - who was popularly known as Mick - was rushed to Kanudjoso Djatiwibowo Hospital. Despite receiving adequate medical treatment there, he passed away at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

“Mick was known to have a history of heart problems,” H. Arin Satafmida, chairperson of the Balikpapan 2-day Enduro Motor, said in Balikpapan on Monday.

Arin explained that Adrian did not die due to landslides or bad weather. “Bad weather and heavy rain that caused muddy conditions were not a hindrance for the participants. The committee reminded those who were unable to fully take part to make shortcuts,” Arin said.

Up to 700 people joined the Balikpapan 2-day Enduro, which was held from Saturday to Sunday in conjunction with the commemoration of the 116th anniversary of Balikpapan City.

Adrian had worked for years at private company PT Pama Persada Nusantara in Balikpapan.

His body is to be sent to Australia by a Balikpapan-based social foundation.
