War against 'wereng': Farmers spray insecticide in the fight against the brown planthopper (wereng) in Kudus, Central Java, on Wednesday. The insects have attacked and damaged up to 200 hectares of paddy fields. Overuse of nitrogen-based fertilizer and insecticides can lead to wereng outbreaks by increasing the fertility of the planthoppers, and by reducing the numbers of their natural enemies.
