he population of East Kalimantan, home to about four million people, is increasing by 3.8 percent a year — the highest rate in Indonesia, according to East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak.
The provincal population growth rate exceeded the national rate of 1.49 percent, Awang said.
Awang attributed the high growth rate to increased migration to the natural resource-rich province from various regions across the country, including East Java and Sulawesi.
Many newcomers flocked to East Kalimantan because of its promising economy, especially due to the availability of many job opportunities, Awang said as reported by Antara news agency.
Most newcomers sought jobs on plantations, in mining or in public service in the province’s biggest cities: Samarinda, Balikpapan and Kutai Kartanegara, the governor said.
In 2000, the population of East Kalimantan was 2.4 million, which had increased to 3.5 million by 2010, according to government statistics. — Antara
