Anas Urbaningrum named
graft suspect

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named Democratic Party chief Anas Urbaningrum a graft suspect for allegedly taking a bribe in relation with the construction of the Hambalang sports complex.

“The KPK’s preliminary investigation has found strong evidence that unveils the suspect’s involvement in a bribery case and other cases related to the construction of the Hambalang sports center,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi told a press conference on Friday.

Anas Urbaningrum resigned from House of Representatives in 2010 as soon after he was elected Democratic Party chairman.

Former Democratic Party’s treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin first claimed that Anas had taken a bribe from PT Adikarya, a state-owned contractor involved in the project.

The KPK earlier named two other suspects in the Hambalang case – former youth and sports minister Andi Mallarangeng and Dedi Kusdinar, also of the same ministry.

However, both Andi and Dedi have been charged in connection to accusations that they embezzled project construction funds.
