n elementary school is subjecting its female students to an “honesty test” by operating a restroom where the girls can use sanitary items and pay for them later.

However, there is no attendant overseeing the restroom or the money box.

Bantarjati 9 elementary school’s principal, Yayah Komariah, said on Thursday that the items, which comprised toilet paper, panties and sanitary pads, were placed inside a box in the girls’ restroom. “When someone uses an item, they should put the right amount of money in the other box,” she told kompas.com.

Yayah said the idea of an honesty toilet came about when a sixth-grader’s period started unexpectedly and she did not have extra panties or sanitary pads. “The school and parents decided after that to provide the items,” she said.

She added that, since the scheme’s introduction in January, no money or items had gone missing.
