Samarinda weavers to get BI loans, training

ank Indonesia (BI) says it will provide loans and training to develop a weaving center in the East Kalimantan capital of Samarinda.

A memorandum of understanding to develop the center was signed in Samarinda on Thursday by the head of the central bank’s provincial office, Ameriza M. Moesa and Samarinda Deputy Mayor Samarinda Nusyirwan Ismail.

BI governor Darmin Nasution and East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak also attended the signing.

Ameriza said that the center, to be called the “Samarinda sarong weaving village” would be developed as a one-stop service tourist attraction.

The center would allow tourists to witness the making of the province’s famous sarongs, offering the garments and other locally made traditional handicrafts for sale.

The agreement calls for Bank Indonesia to provide soft loans for small weaving companies and management trainings. Speaking at the ceremony, Awang said that he hoped that BI’s move to develop the local economy would be followed by other institutions.

The governor also told encouraged investors to take the advantage of opportunities in the province, one of Indonesia’s major oil, gas and coal producers.

He said that realized investment from local and foreign companies, has continued to increase in the province, while direct investment from private companies and state-owned firms was also increasing.

Awang said that investment in East Kalimantan amounted to Rp 28.32 trillion (US$2.92 billion) in 2011, the last year for which statistics were available, comprising Rp 16.21 trillion in domestic investment and Rp 12.12 trillion in foreign investment.

Total investment in 2011 rose from Rp 17.88 trillion in 2010, which comprised Rp 7.88 trillion in domestic investment and Rp 10 trillion in foreign investment.

He said that in the first quarter of 2012, total investment in the province reached Rp 23.8 trillion, comprising Rp 5.6 trillion in domestic investment and Rp 18.2 trillion in foreign investments.

The governor said that total investment in 2012 would be much higher than those recorded in 2011.

Darmin said that the central bank would continue to support the empowerment of small companies in the region in the future.
