T

he National Mandate Party (PAN) wants to nominate more young politicians as legislative candidates in the 2014 elections, according to a senior official.

PAN central board member Bima Arya Sugiarto said that more than 50 percent of the candidates the party would nominate for House of Representatives races in 2014 would be under 40.

“If possible, we want the figure to be over 70 percent,” Bima said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The focus reflected a desire to attract younger voters, according to Bima. “More than 90 million of the nation’s population are young. The makeup of our legislative candidates should reflect the country’s demographics.”

The PAN chief patron Amien Rais previously said that the party would capture at least 11 percent of the vote in 2014.

Amien’s assessment contradicted that offered by the Syaiful Mujani Research Center, which issued a recent survey claiming that PAN would secure only 1.5 percent of the vote if the general election was held today.
