House to issue recommendation on curriculum

T

he House of Representative’s working committee on the National Curriculum say they will issue recommendations on the new curriculum, set to take effect in July, sometime next week.

“[We] hope we can announce the recommendations by next week,” lawmaker Reni Marlinawati Amin from Commission X overseeing education and youth affairs, who is also a United Development Party (PPP) politician, said on Tuesday.

The committee have been mulling their recommendations since January this year and had aimed to finish them within a month.

The new curriculum has drawn criticism from teachers as well as education experts, making it tough for the commission to immediately finalize their recommendations. “The working committee is still working on the recommendations, as we are still holding discussions,” Reni said as quoted by kompas.com.

Several factions at the House including Golkar, Democratic Party and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), have given their support for the Education Ministry to apply the new curriculum, despite mounting criticism of the range of subjects.

The new curriculum will consist mostly of civic education and religion with science being integrated into the two subjects.
