Convention center expanded for APEC

H

aving been the official venue for the high profile 19th ASEAN Summit in November 2011, Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) has been appointed to host a more prestigious, much-anticipated event — the APEC Summit in October this year.

In anticipation of the event, PT Nusa Dua Indonesia, the company that manages the 70,000-square meter (sqm) BNDCC, is expanding the building from its current 25,000 sqm to a total of 50,000 sqm, comprising a convention center and five-star hotel.

“We’re ready to support Bali, and Indonesia, to host the APEC Summit, which 21 heads of state will attend. We are building larger venues to accommodate 12,000 persons,” Danny Budiharto, the company’s president director, said on Saturday at the topping-off ceremony for the second phase of this project.

The first phase of BNDCC construction was completed within seven months, resulting in 19 meeting rooms, a 4,400 sqm convention hall with capacity for 5,000 people that can be converted into five smaller separate rooms, as well as a parking lot able to accommodate 250 vehicles. These facilities have been in operation since September 2011.

“Those facilities were insufficient for larger international events, so we expanded the venue to be able to accommodate 12,000 people by adding 21 meeting rooms, a parking lot for 150 vehicles and a five-star hotel with 100 rooms,” Danny said, adding that this would be the largest convention center in Indonesia.

Currently, the second-phase project has reached 60 percent completion. It was started in October last year and is scheduled for completion by June this year.

At the same time, the holding company, PT Dyandra Media International (DMI), is building a two-star hotel, Amaris Pratama, with 130 rooms located just across from BNDCC.

The MICE (meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition) industry has developed rapidly in line with national economic growth. During the last several years, Indonesia has been one of the world’s most popular MICE destinations.

The success of Bali in hosting many international events has improved the island’s image as a top MICE destination.

Danny said that despite the increasing number and variety of international events being held in Indonesia, the country only had a few venues that fulfilled international standards.

“To further enhance the growth of the MICE industry in Indonesia, we should have more venues with international standards,” he said, adding that the presence of a venue like BNDCC would strengthen Bali’s position as the country’s top MICE destination.

Besides BNDCC, subsidiaries of DMI are also developing four other convention and exhibition centers: Gramedia Expo in Surabaya, East Java; Medan International Convention Center in Medan, North Sumatra; Makassar International Convention Center in Makassar, South Sulawesi: and Indonesia International Convention and Exhibition Center in Tangerang, Banten.

The last two of these convention centers are scheduled for operation in 2014.
