treet vendors in West Jakarta will have space designed for them in the municipality’s shopping centers, in accordance with West Jakarta administration’s midterm regional development plan.
“Relocating street vendors to a traditional market is an obsolete concept. We’re following the governor’s instruction and providing special spaces for them,” West Jakarta Mayor Burhanuddin said at his office on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
The administration will discuss the five-year plan with street vendor communities, while looking for the right place to build malls. The administration plans to involve developers and others in the private sector to realize the plan through corporate social responsibility programs.
In the first phase, Jakarta administration will relocate some 15,000 street vendors to traditional markets managed by city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya. In the meantime, the provincial administration is working on plans to relocate more street vendors to shopping centers and office buildings. Street vendors relocated to traditional markets or shopping centers will be exempt from rent for at least the first six months.
