Airport customs busts 4 for drug smuggling

oekarno-Hatta International Airport’s Customs and Excise office says it has arrested two Indonesians and two Chinese in separate drug smuggling attempts bewteen March 15 and 25.

The Indonesians, identified as F and HW, and the Chinese, identified as ZL and WW, allegedly attempted to smuggle almost a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, and a kilogram of ketamine all worth a total of Rp 2.3 billion (around US$236,000), an official said.

Customs chief Okto Irianto said on Wednesday that F, a repeat offender, allegedly received 712 grams of crystal meth hidden in coat hangers shipped from Liberia, while HW was the alleged recipient of 226 grams of crystal meth hidden in vehicle spare parts sent from Mumbai, India.

“Meanwhile, ZL and WW, who flew with China Airlines from Hong Kong were apprehended at the airport on March 25 for carrying 518 grams and 508 grams of ketamine, respectively,” Okto said.

National Narcotics Agency (BNN) prosecutions chief Sr. Comr. Jan de Fretes said international drug syndicates frequently used the mail system to smuggle drugs into the country.

The Customs and Excise office has foiled 25 drug smuggling attempts and seized various kinds of drugs worth a total of Rp 163.16 billion since January.
