ank CIMB Niaga has launched a cellular phone-based bank account, locally known as rekening ponsel, with which customers can make banking transactions by using their phone.
This new service will target all people, particularly those from the low and middle classes.
Customers can also use the smartphone-based service known as GoMobile, introduced earlier. To develop both services, the bank is allocating Rp 50 billion (US$5 million).
“There are 120 million people who could have bank accounts but are not registered at any bank. Meanwhile, there are no less than 200 million registered mobile phone users in this country,” president director Arwin Rasyid explained.
The company currently has 3.3 million customers, a relatively low figure compared to the number of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) customers, which have reached 15 million customers nationwide. CIMB Niaga has targeted 500,000 users of the service by the end of this year.
