senior Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician says that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono misled the public by indulging in coup d’etat rumors.
PDI-P secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo said that Yudhoyono had erred on the side of caution by reading false intelligence reports about a possible coup against his government.
“It is alright for the President to use the intelligence information, but he should have analyzed it and not taken it at face value,” Tjahjo said.
Before departing for Europe earlier this month, Yudhoyono cited reports saying that “unidentified parties” had tried to take advantage of the political crisis plaguing his Democratic Party to distract and disrupt the work of his government.
Last week, National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Lt. Gen. Marciano Norman accused the Sovereign Indonesian People’s Assembly (MKRI), an activist group, of plotting a coup against Yudhoyono under the guise of a national protest, neither of which materialized, on March 15.
