A

doctor at Harapan Bunda Hospital in Ciracas, East Jakarta, allegedly cut off two segments of 2.5-month-old Edwin Timothy Sihombing’s right forefinger while he was being treated at the hospital for a high fever.

Edwin’s father, Gonti Laurel Sihombing, 34, said on Tuesday evening that the incident occurred when his wife, Romauli Manurung, 28, left Edwin to wash her face at around 7 a.m. on March 31.

He said Romauli, who heard Edwin screaming, rushed to the infirmary.

She and her sister, who was helping to take care of Edwin, saw blood dripping from Edwin’s finger.

Romauli then realized that Edwin’s finger had been amputated.

“I learned of it when my wife called me. Why did the doctor amputate my child’s finger without consulting us first?” Gonti said as quoted by kompas.com.

Gonti said his son was admitted to the hospital for a high fever on Feb. 20.

They returned to the hospital on March 2 because Edwin’s finger had swollen and had not improved since Feb. 22.

Although he was disappointed with the hospital, Gonti said he had yet to report the matter to police.

“It is an allegation. I want to collect evidence first before filing a police report. I’ll also appoint a lawyer,” he said, adding that he was waiting for an official statement on his son’s condition from the hospital.

Harapan Bunda Hospital refused to comment on the matter on Wednesday, saying it would release a press statement the next day.
